Below is a thumbnail sketch of class times.  Our classes are grouped by year of birth.

  For more complete information about each programme, please refer to the Blue Box to the left of your screen.  Find your child's year of birth, open that file--class information, including a class description, times of classes, and fees will appear.  

 At the bottom of the blue section is a file marked Registration form.  You can print it out and mail it.   Or, please call  519-821-5377 for more information, and to pre-register.

   ."WHAT IS ORFF MUSIC?

The Orff Method, also known as "Orff-Schulwerk" or "Music for Children", is an approach to music education

developed by German composer, Carl Orff.  He firmly believed that music training should be combined

with movement and drama to create well rounded musicians.

The Orff approach to music education is holistic, experiential and process oriented.

Orff Early Childhood Music classes accomplish this by means of a carefully planned programme,

beginning with speech patterns, rhythmic movement, and traditional, world and new music.

Each child is encouraged to use her/his voice in a group setting.

The development of a strong, internal steady beat is fundamental to the Orff approach.

Improvisation is encouraged.

Small percussion instruments, non-pitched and pitched, are often used to accompany and enhance the songs.

Orff-Schulwerk Associations are active in more than 30 nations.

"Music for Children-CarlOrff Canada-Musique pour enfants" is our national organization, with over 1000 music educators

dedicated to teaching an exciting and invigorating approach to music education.

The GUELPH ORFF MUSIC STUDIO offers;

* a joyful way to learn music-- listening...moving...singing...and playing

* a well-developed 6-year curriculum......children may join Orff classes from Infants to Senior Kindergarten

* small classes grouped by year of birth

* 7 or 8 week sessions for the very youngest children and accompanying adults (each session introduces different music) 

* 30 week programmes for older children--some are adult-accompanied; some are "children only" classes   Our reasons for a longer programme are 1) It allows TIME to listen and learn and work with  the  music and games--like all "language learning" the language of music is a cummulative skill (for instance, a September My Music Class, and that same class in May, are very different because of the skills that have been developed) , 2) It allows TIME to learn to know and appreciate the other children (and adults) in the class, 3) It allows TIME to feel comfortable improvising in a group situation, 4) It allows us to teach small classes--enough children to be "a group", and few enough children to "take turns".  Smaller classes allow the teacher to fine-tune each lesson to the children in class.   THE ORFF MUSIC PROGRAMME  ALLOWS CHILDREN TO EXPERIENCE THE MUSIC "SLOWLY"--with time for many repetitions (which children love), with time to make the music his/her own, and the time to amplify the music with instruments, movement, and inprovisation. ..............the simple beauty of beautiful music, enjoyed in a small group setting.............THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS TIME COMMITMENT WITH YOUR CHILD/REN                        

 We maintain a one-child-one-adult policy in the adult-accompanied classes (except Family Music Classes)  
       Please make child care arrangements for older/younger siblings 
                              to allow you this special time together.  

* Orff Early Childhood Music classes encourage "the simplicity of music-making"--each person uses her/his voice within a group--we sing together!

             Because recorded music is kept to a minimum, the children learn to enjoy singing and chanting--in class, in the car, at the grocery store, almost anywhere!

             Basic musical concepts are taught through  echo learning, repetition, games, and dances.  Orff classes are fun for everyone--children and adults!

            The instruments are used to add variety to the songs-keeping a steady beat against the rhythms of the music.

                                          Some pitched instruments are introduced in JK and SK classes.

             Orff teachers are trained to plan musical activites that are in-step with the children's developmental skills.

                                            Music enhances language, movement, listening, memorizing, sequencing, mathematical and social skills. 

* We believe that music is for all children, and that all children are musical.

We offer a well-deveolped 6 year curriculum for young children.  Children may join at any year.

* This is our 39th year of working with Guelph's youngest musicians.  We are honoured to have "Orff grandchildren".  Their parents attended Orff classes, and they are now bringing their own children to Orff classes.

* All  classes are taught at The Guelph Youth Music Centre  75 Cardigan St   Guelph.

              It is a beautiful facility, and we are so very lucky to be there!    We have a comfortable (with carpet--we all sit on the floor!), accessible classroom.

              There is free parking--for both vehicles and strollers!
