Royal City Gems--An Artist's Tribute to Guelph

Royal City Gems--An Artist's Tribute to Guelph BARBARA SALSBERG MATHEWS has been creating art since she was a child. While in her teens, she wrote and illustrated two children’s books that were published by Annick Press. She also studied mime in Paris, France in 1979. Barbara graduated with honours from the Ontario College of Art [now OCADU], completed a B.A. in Fine Arts at the University of Guelph and a B.Ed. at the University of Toronto. She also earned her M.Ed. from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, and taught arts in high schools for over 25 years. While studying at the University of Guelph, she met her husband, Bruce, who was also a student and a DJ at the Bullring. When they returned to Guelph after 35 years, Barbara was again struck by the Royal City’s unique charm. Her collection of paintings captures the beauty of the landscapes and architecture through dramatic lighting and a unique perspective. Using acrylics and mixed media, Barbara particularly enjoys capturing the story and mood in local landscapes. She has undertaken numerous private commissions, and has exhibited her work in several Toronto shows. Her work can also be seen at Toronto’s Baycrest Hospital and Princess Margaret Lodge. Barbara has received a number of grants and awards for her work, including: Canada Arts Council, Ontario Arts Council and Ontario Society of Artists 138th Annual Open Juried Exhibition Curry’s Art Store Prize. Since retiring as Head of Visual Arts from Toronto District School Board’s Northern Secondary School, Barbara and her husband live in Guelph where she continues to grow her paintings. "Barbara Salsberg Mathews brings intelligence, wit and whimsy to her paintings. In her exploration of familiar locales, her work focusses on capturing the moment, the beauty and pleasure of the local landscape. From the towering cloudscapes along the Speed to the mottled scales of Guelph’s gryphon, her eye for detail and ability to capture the sense of place is by turns both cheering and thoughtful. Her passion for her adopted city is right there; the essence of Guelph is in her work." Claire Loughheed Executive Director Dundas Valley School of Art
