Noelle Lalonde Into the Woods

by Katie Wilde

It’s exciting to see an artist you met as a student emerge from the cocoon of her education. Noelle Lalonde was a summer student with Guelph Arts Council in 2013 and 2014 – the year I met her. I had the pleasure of seeing her first solo show (on now) and encourage readers to visit and explore the work of this emerging Guelph artist.

Noelle is a painter's painter. In her most recent works she uses flora and fauna as her jumping off point, then "takes the plunge" and immerses herself in the development of the painting as it occurs. She relishes the pure colour and movement of oil paint on the surface, and "listens" to the paint.

In an era when contemporary figuration, animal and flower painting have but few sturdy adherents, she is an artist who follows her inclinations.

“Since graduating OCAD in April, I've participated in a few small group shows in the GTA but "Into the Woods" at Necessary Arts Company will be my first solo show.

Participating in the Guelph Youth Arts Mentorship program in the fall helped me make so many amazing connections in Guelph and opened my eyes to the numerous exhibiting potential in Guelph.

My mentor Jessie Buchanan was a huge component of this and really encouraged me to take my artist career to the next level. She introduced me to Frances Hahn and Necessary Arts Company, and for the past few weeks Frances and I have been working together to organize this show!

The title "Into the Woods" refers to the subject matter of the paintings -  nature/landscape based - and also symbolizes my entry into the professional art world.”
